What's Black, White and Grey All Over?

Posted In: (Not categorized)

Just curious.
How did it ever come to this? Why have we turned our backs on the very people who take care of us???

I have been analyzing the minds and hearts of doctors for the past 2 years now. I have been privy to some of the most exceptional minds and altruistic hearts. Those whom I have met are good and decent people who are trained in the science of medicine. However, the term science lends itself to the belief that medicine is black and white. It is anything but. Medicine is grey matter, training, intellect, art, luck, instinct, mystery and variables that keep changing the shapes of the puzzle pieces.

With such complexities in medicine, how on earth could we expect perfection? Well, it’s simple. We can’t. As long as we live here on this earth, and earth would be the operative word here, neither perfection nor divinity can be achieved.

And, yet, every day society expects just that.

Are there bad doctors out there? Of course. Are there bad airline pilots, bus drivers, ships’ captains, etc? For sure. Then why is it the bad apples of medicine have cost lives and more?

No other profession demands as much sacrifice, time or debt as medicine. After studying the field intensively, this much I know:
If one really intends to do harm, one would not go to such lengths to…
work hard in high school…
get into medical school …
do 3, maybe 7 years of residency …
Possibly a fellowship…
all because one has homicidal tendencies.

If one intends to do harm, sounds to me like a gun would make much more sense.

The majority of doctors are people who enter the field of medicine for the good of humankind. Period.

What on earth have we done?
